Inspired by Hungary's distinctive national character, landscape, and folkways, Pal Böhm brought the immediacy and realism of contemporary German aesthetics to bear upon the vibrant traditions of his homeland. Trained initially in Budapest and Vienna, Böhm eventually traveled to Munich in 1871, where he spent thirty years exploring peasant and gypsy subjects in his art.
