Accessibility
The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum is dedicated to providing access to all in the library, art gallery, and at all our events. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact the Athenaeum at 802-745-1393 or inform@stjathenaeum.org.
Access Ramp
The Athenaeum is accessible with a ramp on the north side of the building, which leads to the elevator. The elevator is equipped with braille and goes to all floors. There are two accessible bathrooms—one in the basement and one on the first floor in the Children’s Library.
Visual Aids
The library offers a collection of large print books, including a rotating collection from the Vermont Department of Libraries’ ABLE (Audio, Braille, Large-print, and Electronic books) Library.

Magnifier
We have a magnifier available at the circulation desk, as well as reading glasses you can borrow.
Digital Talking Book
The Vermont Department of Libraries will loan you a digital talking book player if you are blind or physically handicapped. Check with the Athenaeum or call 802-636-0020 or 800-479-1711.
Links to Accessible Sites
Many of the sites we partner with, including Kid’s Info Bits and other GALE sites, offer translation and text enlargement. Visit our Digital Resources page for more sites.
Kanopy Captioning
Kanopy, our video streaming service, offers closed captioning for their movies and other offerings.
Zoom Live Captions

Writer’s Room
You can reserve our writer’s room to have a quiet place to write, read, study, Zoom, nurse, etc. Contact us at 802-748-8291 or inform@stjathenaeum.org.
Audio Tour
The art gallery has a free audio tour available to all visitors. Each work of art in the gallery is described in the tour. You can access the tour from anywhere at 802-922-9094.
Sensory Backpacks
Visiting the Athenaeum or planning a trip?
The Children’s Library has 2 sensory backpacks available for use to guests with sensory sensitivity. Each backpack is assembled with noise cancelling headphones, sunglasses, doodleboard, fidget toys, meditation bubbler and two books. One backpack is for in-library use only & the other backpack can be checked out for use in the community and travel.
