Friedrich August von Kaulbach descended from a distinguished family of artists and was able to achieve recognition in his own career for his idealized depictions of women, a popular subject during the later nineteenth century. The striking blue backdrop that Kaulbach employed in this composition is a foil for the figure, pushing her forward, and reflects the artist's early interest in the portraits of the German Renaissance master Hans Holbein the Younger who often used a similar approach.
