Nostalgia for simpler times was a characteristic of both European and American culture during the later nineteenth century. Ludwig Hartmann's Horse Market depicts a traditional German village and the informal exchanges by which farm animals had been bought and sold for centuries. The ages of the older men conversing in the foreground reflect the long history of their practice as do the town's ancient walls and medieval buildings. Hartmann excelled as a landscape and animal painter, and this composition combines his mastery of both subjects.
